Fisheries & Aquaculture

Fish farming depends on water source, soil, temperature, fish seed, feed, markets and local regulations. This guide covers freshwater pond aquaculture, composite carp culture, inland saline shrimp systems and suitable cold-water farming in hill areas.

Before investing: test water and pond soil, confirm permissions and seed supply, and prepare a site-specific operating plan. These pages are general information, not a production guarantee or a claim that every species fits every district.

Regional context

Fish farming across our five states

Choose systems only after site and water suitability are assessed.

Punjab

Freshwater pond carp culture can be assessed at suitable sites. Selected inland saline locations have also been studied for aquaculture; saline systems require soil-water tests, permits and a feasibility plan.

State guide ↗
Haryana

Freshwater pond aquaculture may fit appropriate sites. ICAR documented inland saline shrimp farming work in parts of Haryana; this is a specialised system and needs salinity testing and biosecurity.

State guide ↗
Rajasthan

Water supply, evaporation, salinity, and soil conditions are important constraints to assess. Inland saline aquaculture may suit selected sites—not every farm or water source.

State guide ↗
Uttar Pradesh

Freshwater pond systems with Indian major carps are documented in the state. Carp composite culture and some Pangasius systems have been studied in eastern Uttar Pradesh.

State guide ↗
Uttarakhand

Freshwater pond systems may be considered where suitable. Selected hill sites may support rainbow trout where water temperature, flow, oxygen and water quality fit a cold-water system.

Fish species

Commonly discussed species

Species selection is an aquaculture decision—not a universal recommendation. Confirm local conditions and regulatory guidance before stocking.

Rohu

A major freshwater carp commonly used in pond polyculture in suitable Indian inland aquaculture systems. Stocking and growth depend on seed quality, pond carrying capacity, feeding, dissolved oxygen and water quality.

Labeo rohita

Catla

An Indian major carp used in composite culture with compatible species in suitable ponds. Select healthy seed and follow a site-specific stocking ratio with regular water quality and fish-health monitoring.

Catla catla

Mrigal

A bottom-feeding Indian major carp often included in composite carp culture. Suitable stocking combinations, pond preparation, natural food availability, feeding and harvest planning require local advice.

Cirrhinus mrigala

Common Carp

Common carp is cultured in several inland systems, including suitable pond environments. Consider temperature, pond design, seed health, feed, water quality and ecological or regulatory considerations.

Cyprinus carpio

Grass Carp

Grass carp is an herbivorous freshwater species used in some polyculture systems. Suitability and stocking should be checked with fisheries authorities, including potential effects on aquatic vegetation and local ecosystems.

Ctenopharyngodon idella

Silver Carp

Silver carp is used in some composite fish-culture systems. Its role depends on pond productivity, compatibility with other species, approved stocking practice and local environmental guidance.

Hypophthalmichthys molitrix

Pangasius

Pangasius is farmed in some intensive and semi-intensive freshwater systems. A careful business and site plan should cover seed supply, stocking density, feed, water exchange or aeration, fish health, energy and market access.

Pangasianodon hypophthalmus

Vannamei Shrimp (Inland Saline)

Whiteleg shrimp has been explored in certain inland saline waters. It is not suitable for every pond: salinity and ion balance, soil permeability, water supply, biosecurity, discharge rules, approved seed and state permissions must be checked before investment.

Litopenaeus vannamei

Rainbow Trout

Rainbow trout is a cold-water species for carefully selected hill sites with appropriate water temperature, flow, oxygen and year-round water quality. In Uttarakhand, potential is location-specific and may involve raceways or recirculating aquaculture systems.
