Composting can convert suitable organic residues into a more stable soil amendment when feedstock, moisture, aeration, time and hygiene are managed carefully.
Choose and manage material
- Separate suitable crop residues, leaf litter and animal manures from plastic, treated timber and other contaminants.
- Balance coarse and softer material to support aeration; avoid waterlogging and uncontrolled runoff.
- Turn or aerate the heap as appropriate and monitor odour, moisture and maturity.
- Use finished compost only when reasonably stabilised and suitable for the intended crop and application.
Important: Local production, animal-health, certification and scheme requirements vary. Confirm details with the competent state authority or a qualified local adviser before spending or applying inputs.
