Spices & Aromatic Crops

Spice and aromatic crops range from rhizomes and seeds to aromatic herbs. The suitable species, planting material, harvest and drying method depend on the crop, local climate and intended end use.

Ginger

A rhizome spice requiring healthy seed rhizomes and suitable soil moisture and drainage. Shade, nutrient timing, disease prevention and harvest maturity vary with location.

Zingiber officinale

Turmeric

A rhizome crop used as a spice and colourant. Planting material, season, soil tilth, water and nutrient management, and curing practices affect quality.

Curcuma longa

Cumin

A cool-season seed spice grown in suitable dry climates. Sowing window, seed quality, drainage, disease risk, weed management and dry weather near maturity are considerations.

Cuminum cyminum

Coriander

Coriander may be grown for leaves or seed. The intended harvest determines variety, sowing density, nutrient plan and timing.

Coriandrum sativum

Fennel

A seed spice and aromatic crop. Variety, crop duration, spacing, water availability and harvest maturity should be matched to local conditions.

Foeniculum vulgare

Fenugreek

Fenugreek is cultivated for seed and leaves. Crop purpose, sowing window, seed rate, irrigation and harvest approach differ between uses.

Trigonella foenum-graecum

Mint

Mint is grown for leaves or essential oil, depending on species and market. Healthy planting material, moisture, cutting stage, nutrient use and post-harvest processing are important.

Mentha spp.

Curry Leaf

Curry leaf is a perennial aromatic leaf crop. Planting material, spacing, pruning, irrigation, nutrient management and clean leaf handling support regular harvest.

Murraya koenigii

Lemongrass

Lemongrass is grown for aromatic leaves and oil in suitable climates. Variety, planting material, moisture, harvest interval and distillation access influence viability.

Cymbopogon spp.

Vetiver

Vetiver is an aromatic grass whose roots are used for oil and also for erosion-control applications. Site and end-use determine spacing, harvest timing and processing requirements.
